I understand your company is potentially considering work or is already working on the Adani Carmichael mine and /or associated rail and port infrastructure. I am writing to ask you to rule out working on this disastrous project, and let you know I’m willing to take action to #StopAdani.

Adani’s Carmichael mine is the most environmentally and socially contentious projects in the history of Australia. The impacts of the mine on Queensland’s water will be disastrous. Tens of billions of litres of water each year will be drained by the project, placing agriculture in central Queensland at great risk.

The mine is proposed to be one of the largest coal mines in the world and could produce enough coal to emit 4.6 million tonnes of Co2 in the atmosphere, this is equivalent to over eight years of Australia’s annual greenhouse gas emissions.

At a time when Queensland is already first hand feeling the impacts of climate change, with bushfires and droughts it is irresponsible for companies such as yours to work on coal projects in the Galilee Basin like Carmichael mine which will accelerate climate change and its impacts on Queensland communities.

The Carmichael mine project has trampled the rights of traditional owners who have consistently voiced their opposition and lack of consent to the mine and recently had their native title extinguished by the Queensland government.

The shipping of coal from the port through the Great Barrier reef will increase industrialisation of this already climate stressed ecosystem and world heritage listed natural icon. Ecological experts have heavily criticised recent environmental approvals and raised concerns that approved clearing on the site will lead to the extinction of the Black Throated Finch.

Adani has a shocking track record when it comes to the treatment of the contractors it engages on projects. Any company considering working with Adani should be aware that Adani is currently refusing to pay engineering firm AECOM for work they completed on the original rail project plan and take this into consideration when evaluating the risk of working with Adani.

You have an opportunity to show leadership in good corporate social and environmental responsibility. I respectably call on you end all ties with Adani and commit to not working on the Carmichael mine project and any coal project in the Galilee basin. To avoid repetitional risk and being the target of increasingly active protests against companies that work with Adani you should rule out all work on the mine and associated rail and port infrastructure.
